Codex Reset Rules & FAQs

Start with your account for your Codex reset time

OpenAI directs users to the usage dashboard for current limits and exact reset times. In the Codex CLI, running /status displays remaining allowances and recovery timestamps for each active window. Five-hour usage and weekly limits are separate constraints; local and cloud tasks share the plan allowance.

Understand the 5-hour window and weekly allowance reset

Record the window name alongside its next scheduled reset date, time and time zone. A Codex reset for the five-hour window does not replenish the weekly quota. If both windows are exhausted, inspect both before deciding when to resume work.

The timer on this site is a browser countdown based on the timestamp you record from your client. It does not connect to your account or modify quotas. Reaching zero signals that it is time to check your official usage dashboard again.

Credits, promotional banked resets, and public announcements

Additional usage credits and promotional banked resets are distinct mechanisms from automatic quota recovery. An earlier promotion or global announcement is not proof that extra allowances are available in your account today. Always verify the active status in your account before planning large runs.

Practical workflow while waiting for a Codex reset

Before stepping away from a paused task, save a brief handoff note: record completed steps, pending requirements, and the exact next command to run. This preserves working context even if official recovery timestamps fluctuate. Never infer a universal Codex reset from screenshots shared by others.
