The quick answer
Read the full Grok limit message to distinguish weekly allowance exhaustion, insufficient credits, and request throttling. See the Grok usage guidance and API rate-limit documentation for the applicable rules.
Choose your next step
- Free Chat or Voice limit: read the message for that feature. Free limits follow their own schedule; the paid weekly reset is not their reset time.
- Paid weekly pool exhausted: check Settings → Usage. Wait for the displayed reset, use any free Chat or Voice allowance still available, or review the paid options below.
- API HTTP 429: read the error details and the affected endpoint’s limits. For confirmed rate limiting, reduce concurrency and use documented exponential backoff. Buying credits does not by itself remove a rate limit.
- Insufficient credits or a public announcement: check the balance or the announcement’s stated product and plan. A Grok Bot announcement does not establish recovery for every Grok account.
Identify the limit and check the result
First distinguish a notice inside Grok from an API response. For the API, xAI documents the status 429 Too Many Requests; the checks below help identify the relevant limit.
Free Chat or Voice is limited
Read the notice in the affected feature and check whether it names a reset time. Do not substitute the paid pool's weekly date. If no time is given, leave it unknown and follow the reset-time checks. After the stated wait, return to that same feature for one small check; access to a different feature does not establish recovery. Repeatedly sending the same request is not a reset method.
The paid weekly pool is exhausted
Open Settings → Usage in the same account on web or mobile. Match the usage percentage and weekly reset time to the restriction you encountered. Wait for that time, use remaining free allowances, or review the optional paid choices below. Then reopen Usage and check whether the intended paid feature works. A new conversation or a billing renewal date does not establish that this pool has recovered.
Extra Usage Credits are missing or unavailable
Check the balance in Settings → Usage, the account used for the purchase, and the payment confirmation. These credits are used after the included weekly allowance is exhausted. After a purchase, verify the balance and try the intended feature once; do not buy again solely because the first attempt still failed. If the payment and balance disagree, contact support through the app or grok.com with the transaction details. Do not post payment details publicly. A credit balance is not proof that an API rate limit has cleared.
The API returns 429 Too Many Requests
Read the response body and identify the team, model and endpoint. Open xAI Console → Models to check that team's applicable limits; request frequency, token throughput and some voice concurrency limits are distinct. Reduce the workload that exceeds the relevant limit and use bounded exponential backoff. Verify with one request and inspect its response before restoring normal concurrency. Persistent 429 responses need another limit/error check, not an assumed subscription reset. See API rate limits.
Free allowances, additional credits, and announcement scope
- Waiting for the displayed weekly reset requires no additional purchase. When the paid pool is exhausted, free Chat and Voice may still be available within their own limits.
- If you need to continue paid features, Extra Usage Credits can be purchased from Settings → Usage on grok.com. xAI currently supports purchasing these credits on the web only, not through the mobile app. Check the price, balance and covered products before paying.
- A higher plan can provide a larger weekly allowance. Review the price and account terms before choosing it; upgrading is optional.
- Auto Top Up can buy credits automatically when your balance runs low. It incurs additional charges; choose the top-up amount and monthly cap before enabling it. You do not need to enable it to wait for a reset.
- Check your account’s current terms for which API and consumer products credits cover. Credit availability and endpoint rate limits are different checks.
- Read a Grok Bot announcement within its stated scope. For unexpected errors, check official service status; service recovery does not prove that your personal allowance has reset.
Work to prepare while waiting
- Save existing code changes and record completed work and next steps.
- Narrow the next task to avoid repeating investigation after recovery.
- Save the official reset timestamp in this site's local timer. It counts down to the time you entered and does not monitor your account; return to Grok to check when it expires.
